CITIZEN POLICE CONCEPT

“To maintain at all times a relationship with public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and that public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen, in the interests of community welfare and existence.”

Founder of Modern Policing

-About Crime Stoppers

  • In India , as in the rest of the world there has been an unprecedented growth of crime and violence causing concern to one and all. Crime is affecting every one every where. Police all over the world are constantly striving hard to prevent, control and detect crime. However, as we all know many crimes remain unsolved and many criminals go scot free.
  • Many recent incidents such as the blasting of the World Trade Centre in New York, London Bombings, Bombay Blasts, Noida serial murders, sexual assaults, money laundering, bank robberies, drug trafficking, human trafficking have become day to day happenings in our life.

Crimes Can Not Be Solved By Police Alone

•  Citizens have lot of information about many crimes and criminals. They do not however share with the police for various resonss such as: fear of reprisal by criminals, fear of suspicion by police, need to attend the courts as witnesses, lack of knowledge about how to inform the police or any other agency, and not realizing that such information may be useful.

•  Citizens have a responsibility to the society and to the nation to share whatever information they have about the crimes and criminals with the police and other enforcement agencies to help them prevent, control and solve the crime.

•  Crime Stoppers is a concept introduced in 1976 in USA realizing that people can play an important role in the control of crime and other matters of public concern if there is an appropriate medium or forum which can ensure their safety and anonymity.

•  Crime Stoppers is a method adopted by the original founder of the organization Mr. Greg MacAleese, a police officer, who inspired the confidence of people through personal appeals and got vital information about a sensational crime which otherwise he failed to get and could thus successfully solve the brutal killing of a young man.

•  After the success of his bold and imaginative concept he started Crime Stoppers as an independent organization in 1976 in Albuquerque NM , USA and soon it has spread to other towns and cities of USA and to neighboring Canada . By now it is extended to 20 other countries including UK, Australia, Holland, South Africa, Central America, Caribbean llands, fiji, guam, Palau, Papua New Guinea, etc.
